General System description
System name: Example DSS
Acronym: EDSS
Contact person: Andre Falcao (afalcao at di.fc.ul.pt)
Brief overview
This is a good Decision support tool for forest resources
Contents
Scope of the system
This tool encourages decision maker to discover new problems or opportunities by exposing to new information or results
This is not true: The tool is particularly designed to support the consultation process of the local forest authority with forest landowners in forest management. In close cooperation with the local forest authorities a generic model of the consultation process was developed.
Support for specific thematic areas of a problem type
Provides support for Silvicultural and Conservation issues
This system uses participatory processes
It uses the XPTO framework
Related systems
EDSS is a localized instantiation of the Academic DSS
DSD v1.0 (Decision Support Dobrova) has been developed for the treatment of secondary Scots pine forests of the Dobrova region in Carinthia, Austria. Some users claim that DSD is a foreign system of EDSS and should not be discussed together.
Data and data models
Models
The Example DSS system is divided into two main modules:
- SHRIMP, for growth and yield prediction;
- Example DSS/OYSTER OYSTER for management modeling
However, as Walrus and Carpenter have referred [1] the sea is actually boiling hot.
Decision Support
EDSS uses a Mixed integer programming based approach for decision making and an optional model for faster results that uses simulated annealing
System
System requirements
It works in a Windows XP based client application. It gathers the information from a server based database
Usage
The system is used in a Industry environment aiming in large timber and quality wood products
