  • Monthly surf alerts categories
  • Library catalog search
    • http://fsinfo.fs.fed.us/cgi-bin/gw/chameleon
    • keyword search is uncontrolled search of entries

IUFRO SilvaVoc

IUFRO Global Forest Decimal Classification Unit

  • They've published their keyword set but it's not available on line - they sell it for 35 euros
  • GFDC fits within the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), a multilingual classification scheme for all fields of knowledge (http://www.udcc.org/about.htm).
  • UDC contains 66,000 numbers (2005)
  • Although it is not designed with end-users in mind, it is an excellent, comprehensive reference tool and is available under licence terms to classifiers, librarians and other users. Ideally, in bibliographic databases or OPACs, the MRF should be integrated into local cataloguing or indexing systems which provide a familiar and customized interface.

FAO AgroVoc

  • AGROVOC is a multilingual, structured and controlled vocabulary designed to cover the terminology of all subject fields in agriculture, forestry, fisheries, food and related domains (e.g. environment).
  • AGROVOC contains more than 28,000 descriptors and more than 10900 non-descriptors (synonyms). For indexing purposes, it is important that only descriptor terms are used.
  • AGROVOC is free of charge for educational or other strictly non-commercial purposes. Downloading is authorized without any prior written permission from the copyright holders provided the source is fully acknowledged.
  • AGROVOC is accessible via web services, which can be called from any client application.

PNW Information Management Studies

  • Four reports authored by Eric Landis (consultant) to help PNW Station improve its information management. Here are some annotations related to keywording:
  1. Current situation: information content, structure and accessibility (2/2002 PDF 2.2MB)
    • (you'll have to View-Rotate it to get it right side up)
  2. User needs assessment (5/2002 PDF 3MB)
    • a number of users requested the ability to browse by keywords (aka index)
    • thesaurus could help less technical users find what they need (help them navigate the specialized terminology)
    • a few requested some type of research registry to find currently active projects
  3. Study and recommendations for improving data and information management (1/2003 DOC 577k)
    • HJ Andrews is using a modified Global Change Master Directory (from NASA) term list (http://gcmd.gsfc.nasa.gov/).
