Professor Maarten Nieuwenhuis grew up in The Netherlands and he completed his Ingenieur Degree at Wageningen Agriculture University in 1981. His specialisation was forest engineering. He then went to the USA where he completed his MScF and PhD at the University of Maine. His research focused on the use of GIS in forest road planning. He started working at University College Dublin as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Forestry in 1986. His primary research interest is the planning and implementation of sustainable forest management. He is active in the International Union of Forest Reseach Organisations (IUFRO) as Working Group Leader and Deputy International Council Representative. He is the Assessment Appeals Oficer in UCD.
