This decision is heavily affecting the economic efficiency and environmental soundness of operations, since many “high impact” logging operations are the result of poor terrain elevation decisions. In the mid-1990s, the forest engineering group at ETH developed a spatial decision support system (SDSS), providing the following capabilities (Lüthy 1998). Firstly, it delineates terrain units suitable for ground-based and for cable-based operations and units that are inaccessible.
