General System description

System name: Heureka RegWise

System overview

RegWise is an application of the Heureka for making long-term forest scenario analyses for a multi-objective forestry. Analyses are primarily based on data from the Swedish National Forest Inventory and other data sources as remote sensing and digital map data.

It consists of models that predict the tree-layer development for a rotation period. Examples are growth-, mortality-, biomass models and models for carbon and wood properties. The user can simulate a number of treatments as regeneration, thinning and clearcutting. All species important for wood production in Sweden such as Scots pine, Norway spruce, Birch, Lodge-pole pine, Oak and Beech can be dealt with the simulator.

RegWise simulates the development of forests for larger areas such as counties over long time periods (about 100 years). The analyses includes production of timber and bio fuel, sequestration of carbon, potential for biodiversity and suitability for recreation. The analyses are based on detailed assumptions' of future forest management.

RegWise works for all types of forests, pure and mixed-stands as well as even-aged and uneven-aged forests. Basically, RegWise rely upon forecasts of the tree-layer development and output of goods and services are a result of treatments and the state of the tree layer for each five-year period.
