INTEGRAL – 1st newsletter

May 7th, 2012 by ola No comments »

INTEGRAL - Future-oriented integrated management of European forest landscapes -  is a FP7 Seventh Framework Programme with 21 Project Partners from 14 countries. INTEGRAL relies heavily on fores DSS for its completion. The four-year cooperation project provides a coherent process of policy formation for integrated management of European forest landscapes. INTEGRAL will (1) create knowledge and competence base for integrating international, national and local levels in participatory decision and planning processes and (2) provide recommendations for new coherent policy instruments and management strategies as well as decision support tools.

The first newsletter of the INTEGRAL is now out. With the newsletter service free biannual updates will be provided to keep relevant target groups at EU-, national and regional level informed on news about the project, scheduled events and recent publications.

CompSust’12: 3rd International Conference on Computational Sustainability

April 30th, 2012 by ola No comments »

CompSust’12

Location: Biocenter, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark

Date: July 5-6, 2012 (master class held July 4, 2012)

The conference focuses on computational methods for balancing environmental, economic, and societal needs for a sustainable future. Through talks, discussions, poster sessions, and invited talks, the conference program will investigate the major problem domains that impact global sustainability, those technologies and processes that offer the greatest opportunity to increase sustainability in these domains, and the fundamental computational methods that support these technologies and processes. Participants include representatives from national and international research institutions and government agencies. CompSust’12 will also introduce a new Master Class component, providing high level tutorials in mainstream computational sustainability research directions.

Training School on Decision Support Systems for Sustainable Forest Management

March 12th, 2012 by hvacik No comments »

In the context of the COST Action FORSYS a Training School on “Decision Support Systems for Sustainable Forest Management” is organized by BOKU and taking place from 16.09-21.09.2012 in Vienna, Austria. The training school intends to focus on the development and application of forest management decision support systems (DSS). The general aim of the course is to make participants familiar with the challenges of DSS development, give insight to existing DSS cases and allow them to contribute to projects focussing on decision support. The training school will concentrate on the theory of decision sciences, case studies and practical training examples. Thematic issues to be addressed will include the wide range of topics covered in sustainable forest management in particular focussing on challenges related to spatial planning, predicting forest dynamics under climate change and modelling trade offs of different ecosystem services.

The Training School is targeted to postgraduate students. Admission is conditional on the presentation of every student’s doctoral work; therefore PhD students who want to apply normally need to be advanced in their PhD to have produced at least some substantive work, but not to have completely finished their thesis. Interested candidates should send the application to the chair of the organizing committee: Harald Vacik (harald.vacik@boku.ac.at). Deadline for the application is 3rd of June 2012. The Organizing Committee will select the candidates based on their application.

An excerpt of the journal International Innovation is now available as a high- and low-resolution PDF. It may be edited, for instance to better fit a two page leaflet. The entire magazine can be viewed online by filling in a couple of details at the registration page and click on the edition headed ‘Addressing food security’. Note that the article follows a standard 3-page format common to all project commentaries in the journal.

Survey (deadline 17 dec) “Foresight on Future Demand for Forest-based Products and Services”

December 9th, 2010 by ola No comments »

From the COST Office:

The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) and theEuropean Forest Institute (EFI) are coordinating “COST Strategic Workshops: Foresight on Future Demand for Forest-based Products and Services”. Part of the exercise in 2010-2011 is to collect expert perceptions about the futures of the forest-based sector in a long time horizon.

You have now a chance to contribute to the forest-based sector futures 2050 by giving your input to the Internet Survey “Foresight on Future Demand for Forest-based Products and Services” at www.edelphi.fi/en/groups/COSTforesight/.

This is an explorative exercise to challenge our thinking about the future and the different development pathways there might open in the future for forests and the forest-based sector as a whole. Although the forest sector has been active in forward looking studies and analyses – such as growth trends, market analysis etc. – there is a need for more demand-side oriented exercise involving actors and stakeholders also outside the core forest sector.

The Internet Survey is open until December 17, 2010 and there is open access for registrations. Please feel free to distribute this invitation to key organisations and individuals you want to participate in this exercise.

The survey results will be used for defining research needs for the forest-based sector and related sectors, and the results will be disseminated to policy and decision makers in two conferences in the autumn 2011. The data and information collected will be made available for those contributing to the survey. Please, see the short introduction at the Survey website – and if you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact Ms. Paivi Pelli at EFI (paivi.pelli @ efi.int).

Share you perceptions and learn about how others see the future, the opportunities and challenges ahead us!
